Laborers’ Local 169 co-sponsors a joint Labor Management Training and Apprenticeship Program. The program provides both hands-on and classroom-based training and instruction to journeyman and apprentice Construction Craft Laborers, which includes:
  • Apprenticeship training to prepare skilled workers for the construction industry. Learn about and apply to the Apprentiship Program here.

Laborers’ Training Center

The Northern Nevada Laborers’ Training Center is a 14,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility sitting on 10 acres a few miles east of Reno. We provide hands-on training in most of our skills related courses, so participants get a taste of the real-world activities that take place on construction sites.

Aerial Lifts (MEWP)

This 12-hour class covers the safe operation of boom lifts and scissor lifts and the safety precautions that must be observed during operation. Topics include vehicle stability and limitations; personal fall arrest systems; overhead and other hazards; and equipment inspections. Hands-on activities will include operation of various aeiral lifts.

MEWP: Mobile Elevating Work Platform boom, sissicor, and other Aerial lifts.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required.

This 8-hour course is for those who have taken an Asbestos Worker or refresher course within the last two years and satisfies EPA requirements for asbestos refresher training. Topics covered include: health effects of asbestos; medical monitoring and surveillance; worker rights and protections; PPE; site safety; preparing the work area; negative air systems; containment; decontamination; air monitoring techniques; and hazard communication. New regulations and changes in the industry will also be discussed.

This 16-hour class covers methods of cutting with an oxy-acetylene torch and the safety precautions and practices that must be taken. Topics include properties of flammable gases; using oxygen safely; fire extinguishers and their use; oxy-acetylene torch system components; setting up the system for cutting; operating an oxy-acetylene torch safely and effectively; storing the system; and additional types of fuel.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required.

This 40-hour course provides the initial EPA required training for abatement workers and covers the following topics: hazards and health effects of asbestos; medical monitoring and surveillance; legal rights of workers; PPE; specific procedures used on the job; site safety; engineering controls; negative air systems; decontamination; air monitoring; and OSHA standards that govern the work. Course work will include both classroom and hands-on activities.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required.

This 8-hour course is for those who have taken an Asbestos Supervisor or refresher course within the last two years. It satisfies EPA requirements for asbestos supervisor refresher training. Topics include: types of asbestos; health effects; medical monitoring and surveillance; legal standards; respiratory protection programs; and record keeping requirements. New regulations and changes in the industry will also be discussed.
This 40-hour class introduces participants to working with asphalt. Topics covered include asphalt tools and materials; asphalt safety; grades and slopes; estimating asphalt quantities placing and paving; crew member responsibilities; and patching and repair. Hands-on activities will include asphalt placement, raking, patching and repairing.
This course will introduce the components of the ATI Solar Array system and assembly of the components during hands-on activities. The course is approximately 4-6 hours and all hands-on activities will be conducted outside. PPE is required.
This 40-hour course presents print-reading fundamentals. Topics include sketching, computer-aided design, trade math symbols and abbreviations, plot plans, elevations, sections and details. Participants will use actual blueprints and work through assignments to grasp concepts. Highway construction plans will be introduced. PPE is required.
This 40-hour course focuses on the placement and finishing of slabs-on-grade. Participants will be introduced to and use various finishing equipment during hands-on activities. ACI methods and certification will be discussed and practiced. This class is for those Apprentices who have complete Concrete Worker Part 1 and Part 2, or journeymen with verified experience working in concrete construction.
This 40-hour class discusses various common defects in concrete that can be repaired and methods of repair. Tools and materials commonly used will be discussed and demonstrated. Participants will practice repair methods during hands-on activities.

This 40-hour course introduces members to concrete work and covers the following topics; safety and health hazards of concrete work; site preparation; form building and setting; forming systems; estimating concrete quantities; placement and consolidation; and finishing and curing concrete. Participants will gain knowledge and practical experience in the placement and finishing of concrete.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required.

This 40-hour class provides a foundation for all of the math used in construction through classroom and hands-on activities. Topics include basic math operations (ASMD); working with fractions and decimals; layout and squaring; area and volume calculations and formulae; slope ratios and percent of slope; offsets and stations; and differential leveling.

Every year tens of thousands of people are injured or killed from electrical shocks/contacts in the United States. Employees are exposed to dangers such as electric shock, electrocution, burns, fires, and explosions. It is essential to understand how electricity is potentially lethal for us and how we can save lives. This course gives a basic understanding of how to prevent or eliminate work-related injuries.

This 4-hour class covers OSHA’s Fall Protection standard, fall hazards and safety issues on the job, PPE, OSHA regulations and requirements for protecting workers from falls. PPE is required.

This 8-hour certification class helps non-medical professionals provide assistance in times of crisis.The first part of the class covers best practices for first aid for a wide range of medical conditions. The CPR portion of the class provides methods and practice for treating both adults and children during a cardiac emergency. AED: Automated External Defibrillator.

This 40-hour course helps to prepare Laborers to become foremen. Topics covered include the foreman’s role; assuring crew and job site safety; record-keeping and documentation; project planning and management; effective communication; and employee supervision.

Forklift Safety

This 16-hour course covers the hazards and safe operation of rough terrain forklifts (also known as telehandlers). Topics include types of forklifts and terminology; identifying and avoiding hazards; inspection and maintenance; reviewing job site conditions; and safe operating practices. Hands-on activities will include operating rough terrain forklifts of various sizes under simulated job site conditions.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required.

This 40-hour class is for those new to construction and covers basic information on the trade, the tools we use, and safety. Topics include First Aid/CPR; confined space awareness; fall protection; material identification and handling; selection and use of hand and power tools; reducing silica exposure; and pneumatic tool use and safety. Hands-on activities will be included.

This 40-hour class covers common hazards in construction, tools of the trade, and successful habits for apprentices. Topics covered include heat stress; small engines; soil compaction; powder actuated tools; chain saw safety and maintenance; scaffold user safety; and financial tools. Hands-on activities will be included.

This 40-hour class covers common hazards in construction and tools of the trade. Topics include lead action level; back injury prevention; basic construction math; hearing protection; NDOT Flagger; aerial lifts; and hazard communication/GHS. Hands-on activities will be included.

Construction Craft Laborers (CCLs) will use many different hand tools on a construction site. This module reviews each tool and the proper use of the right tool for the job that they are doing and how to properly maintain tools to keep them in good working order. Broken or worn tools are unsafe as well as inefficient.
This 4-hour class will describe what heat stress is, the health effects of the various levels of heat stress, conditions that create a greater risk for heat stress, self-monitoring for symptoms, and actions that you and your employer can take to reduce the risk of experiencing the symptoms of heat stress.
The course provides an awareness of the causes for secondary infection, the importance of infection control, and procedures for properly conducting construction activities within an occupied facility and health care facility.
This 4-hour course covers the hazards and precautions used on jobs involving lead exposure. This course is intended to provide awareness to members and does not comply with EPA or OSHA regulations for workers who may be potentially exposed to elevated lead levels, or for those working in target housing or child-occupied facilities. Topics covered include the history of lead and its uses; health effects; abatement methods on steel structures; and OSHA lead regulations.
This 40-hour course discusses the mason tender’s duties, proper job task performance, and health and safety issues associated with mason tending. Participants use mathematical and scientific concepts to achieve an understanding of working with masonry units, mortar, and admixtures. In addition, the fundamentals of cutting and cleaning masonry, and the proper use and tools of the trade are covered.
This 4-hour awareness course discusses mold, different types of mold, how it can occur, and where it is encountered. Topics include health effects of mols exposure, PPE and methods of protection.

This 24-hour class for new miners covers operations at Part 46 mining facilities and fulfills the MSHA training requirements to work for contractors at these facilities. Topics include hazard recognition; electrical and mechanical hazards; silica and airborne hazards; and workplace rights. Note: this training is not a substitute for site-specific training that your employer is required to give you.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required.

This 8-hour class is for those members who have taken an MSHA new miner training within the last twelve months. It fulfills the annual refresher training requirement of MSHA. Topics include hazard recognition; electrical and mechanical hazards; silica and airborne hazards; and workplace rights. You must have a current MSHA certification to take this class.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required.

This 4-hour certification course has been approved by the Nevada Department of Transportation and covers procedures for flaggers working on NDOT projects. All flaggers on these projects must have a certification of training in their possession while working. Topics include work zone hazards and safety; state regulations; flagging PPE and equipment; and flagging procedures.
This 32-hour course covers workplace safety and health hazards and the regulations that protect you on the job site. Many construction contractors are requiring their employees to have an OSHA 30 card. Topics include job site hazard recognition, avoidance, and prevention; the fatal four; PPE; health hazards; stairways and ladders; worker rights; and employer responsibilities.
This 12-hour course is required for all members working on construction sites in the state. This course covers many of the hazards in the construction industry and the OSHA standards in place to protect you on the job. Some of the topics include the fatal four; PPE; fall protection; electrical safety; and trench safety.

Permit Required Confined Space

This 16-hour class covers the hazards associated with working in confined spaces and safety precautions that must be taken during this work. Topics include characteristics of a confined space; hazardous atmospheres; air monitoring; PPE; ventilation; isolation of hazards; a discussion on confined space rescues; and OSHA regulations. Hands-on activities include preparing for and entering a mock confined space.

This 40-hour course covers gravity flow pipe systems, the math used during layout and installation, and the tools, PPE, and equipment to perform the work. Trench and excavation safety practices will be reviewed and practiced during hands-on exercises.

Polyethylene Pipe Fusion course is designed for workers who want to learn more about the fusing together of polyethylene (PE) pipes. Participants will learn about the fusing machine, the fusing process, and safety precautions, as well as demonstrate proper procedures for fusing PE pipe. Special emphasis is placed on developing safe work habits.

This 8-hour class is designed to make members aware of the hazards of silica exposure and methods to protect themselves. Topics covered include silica history and properties; health effects of silica exposure; silica regulations and guidance; and silica determination and work practice controls.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required.

This 40-hour course covers safety and the procedures for working safely around cranes. Topics covered include types of cranes; common causes of accidents; safe work practices; math for rigging; rigging hardware and slings; and crane signaling. During hands-on activities, participants will calculate the weights of loads; choose proper rigging hardware and rig the load properly; and signal the crane operator to pick and move the load.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required.

This 40-hour class discusses the most common types of scaffold used in construction, reasons why scaffolds fail, calculating load capacities, scaffold performance, OSHA Regulations, and tools and PPE used to build scaffold. Hands-on activities will include building frame, tube and clamp, and system scaffold. Additional types of scaffold may be included as dictated by industry needs.

This 8-hour course introduces participants to common types of scaffold in the construction industry, reasons why they may fail, calculating load capacities, and how load may effect a scaffold’s performance. Relevant OSHA regulations will also be reviewed.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required

This 16-hour course covers the hazards and safe operation of skid steer loaders (i.e. Bobcat). Topics include terminology; identifying and avoiding hazards; inspection and maintenance; reviewing job site conditions; and safe operating practices. Hands-on activities will include pre-operational inspections, review of the Owner’s Manual, and operating skid steers with forks under simulated job site conditions related to solar work.

*Personal Protective Equipment Required.

This 40-hour course introduces participants to assembling the racking used to carry the photovoltaic modules that power solar farms. Topics include the purpose and identification of various racking components, what they are, and how they are assembled. The course will also cover the operation and maintenance procedures of a Vermeer PD10R solar pile driver in a production environment. Hazards of operation and necessary safety precautions will be discussed and practiced. Hands-on activities include will involve handling the various racking components and building the racking system. In addition, hands-on practice driving piles used on solar projects will also be provided. Safety considerations will be reviewed and incorporated during hands-on activities.
This 24-hour class covers operation and maintenance of the Vermeer PD10R pile driver. Topics covered include safety issues, functions of the machine, layout of piles on a typical solar project, and daily and periodic maintenance tasks that you will be expected to perform.
This 40-hour course focuses on the work related to structural concrete in bridges and buildings and will include classroom sessions and hands-on activities including use of forming systems and hardware; job-built forms; form building and setting; estimating concrete quantities; placement and consolidation of concrete; and form stripping, cleaning and storage.
This 8-hour course was developed by LIUNA Training and is approved by NDOT to meet the requirements for personnel trained in Traffic Control on NDOT projects. We are on the Authorized List of Certified Traffic Control Technician training providers by the California Department of Transportation and will meet training requirements of CalTrans projects. This course is an introduction to temporary traffic control in work zones. Topics covered include the concepts, techniques, and practices used in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices. Certification is available for this class and will be accepted by NDOT and other Nevada governmental entities. Individuals applying for Certification must meet all certification requirements to receive certification. Note: this class must be completed for those interested in the Traffic Control Supervisor Certification.

This 8-hour class covers OSHA standards for trenches and excavations. Topics include hazards of working in trenches; soil types; methods of protection; types of protective systems; and trench cave-ins.

This 16-hour course was developed by LIUNA Training and is approved by NDOT to meet the requirements for personnel trained in Traffic Control on NDOT projects. This course covers the design, setup and maintenance of temporary traffic control in highway work zones. Topics covered include the implementation of traffic control plans; techniques for safe installation and removal of temporary traffic control; reading and interpreting plans and specifications; real world examples of traffic control setups; analyzing and correcting deficiencies; and effective supervisory skills. Note: Certification is available for this class and will be accepted by NDOT and other Nevada governmental entities. Individuals applying for Certification must meet all certification requirements to receive certification. To obtain the TCS certificate, you must successfully complete the TCT class and provide documentation of 4000 hours of work in temporary traffic control and two references from these jobs.

This 8-hour course covers the hazards related to working around asbestos-containing transite pipe.

Topics covered include transite pipe use and identification; health effects of asbestos; EPA and OSHA regulations related to medical monitoring and surveillance; worker rights and protections; PPE; EPA classifications of asbestos work; and site safety. This course does not cover procedures related to the abatement of asbestos-containing material (See Asbestos Worker course description).
