Union contractors were 20 percent more likely to engage in prevention through design practices. Almost 80 percent of union contractors said they conduct hazard analysis before projects begin; only 56 percent of non-union contractors said the same. This resulted in fewer fatalities when compared with non-union populations. A one percent decline in unionization results in about a five percent increase in the rate of occupational fatalities.
